NaNoWriMo Camp
Good Morning, friends! As you all know, I do NaNoWriMo every year. I’m not successful at it, but I always give it a try! Some of you may realize that it is July right now and not November, which is the actual National Novel Writing Month. Apparently, they have an online camp this month which I just found out about via Facebook, because that’s apparently where I find everything out. One of my lovely friends posted about it very early this morning and I’ve just now investigated and immediately joined in on it.
I promise I will not be writing about my writing habits every day this month like I do in November. I just got really excited about this and felt the need to share my excitement. Despite never ever actually finishing a novel in a month, or even getting close to the actual goal, I find that I do get a lot more done when I have the deadline at the end of the month and can update my word count and see my progress on a graph and everything. I’m sure there are programs out there that I could use to do this all year round, but it wouldn’t be the same. So I’m pretty pumped to have a summer time opportunity to set my own goal and not have a giant holiday at the end of the month to throw off my final stretch.
I set my goal at 20,000 words for this month. It’s not enough to finish the novel, but I think it might be a more realistic goal for me right now. Maybe if I can discipline myself well enough to make this goal I can up my game for November. We shall see. From my previous experiences I know that 1,000 words a day is a pretty doable goal for me, but I also know that I almost never write on weekends or holidays for that matter. And I never write on Sundays. That’s at least 10 days I won’t get to write, which is 10,000 words that won’t get written. So instead of going for 30,000 and hoping I can somehow push myself to that goal, I’m working with a more reachable number for camp in the hopes that a small victory will lead to a bigger one later on.
I’m also super excited about this new novel I’m going to be working on. I’ve abandoned my previous novel for the time being as I got absolutely nowhere with it last year and seeing as I’ve been working on it for so long now I think we just need a break. A very long break. A break that may never end, we’ll see. Anyway, I’ve had this new idea kind of floating around in my head since like my junior year of college and I’m finally working on it properly. The basic premise is thus: A man has a pocket watch that takes him to an alternate dimension which is stuck in a steampunk Irish revolution type setting. He has lots of adventures there, but at some point decides it’s better to live in our world and marry the girl he loves, rather than risking his life for a world that’s not his. Years later he does and his granddaughter, who is named for him, finds the pocket watch and is accidentally transported to this world in the middle of the night, and into the middle of a battle where the watch is broken, leaving her stranded. More adventure ensues.
So that’s the plan. I have three whole characters thus far and only one of them has a name. I figure I’ll flesh them out when I come to them. That’s basically how I write anyway. I just sort of figure things out as they happen. I can never write just random scenes like other people do. I have a lot of friends who just write the interesting bits and go back to connect them all, but I never know what’s going to happen until I get there. There’s always the chance for things to change between now and then. I have to write in a straight line to find out what happens.
We’ll see how this month goes. You might get updates on that, in fact, you probably will get updates at some point when I don’t know what else to write about. I will hopefully try to form an actual schedule for the month to keep me on track. We’ll see how that goes. I always think it’s a great idea, but I never actually follow through with it. Maybe it’ll work this time, who knows? Anyway, wish me luck, friends! And have a lovely day!
