Days of Thankfulness: Siblings
I thought about doing family all as one unit, but I feel like that would have been a pretty long post, so I broke it up into parts. Today, I am thankful for my siblings, all four of them. I was blessed with a bother and sister to grow up beside me, even when they were a pain. I was further blessed when I gained two shiny new sisters upon marrying into the Scavo family. I am so thankful to have all of them in my life.
I am thankful for my brother. Eric is 17 months older than I am, which means he was always just a little ahead. He was super into having a baby sister when I was born, apparently, and I’d believe it. We grew up pretending we were Pokemon trainers in the back yard, long before I actually knew how Pokemon worked. And Digimon, we were huge Digimon fans. My brother was the one who taught me video games, on the computer and on the console. He got me into reading when he shared his books with me. He was the one who got me into text role based roleplay and then table top games. Basically my half my interests I got from him. I am thankful for my brother who has been there my whole life, keeping stride and leading me by the hand when necessary. I’m thankful that I grew up with a friend, for a brother who was willing to let me sleep on the couch in his room so I could watch Mythbusters and not be alone while having anxiety attacks in the middle of the night. I’m thankful that we have things to do together, that we can play games together over the internet and go to conventions together, and play Pathfinder once a month. I’m thankful for my brother.
I am thankful for my sister. Erin is two years and two weeks younger than me and can be a pain in the butt, but I love her anyway. The funny thing about our relationship is that while she wanted to do all the things I did as an older child, she was also the one in charge of all our games. We’d play house and she’s tell me all the rules and how we were going to play and what we were going to do and if I didn’t like them and said I wasn’t going to play she would relent and give me one thing that I wanted. She was a very bossy child, and I spoiled her. Let her walk right over me because she is my baby sister and I wanted, and still want, to give her the world. I am thankful for a sister with whom I can commiserate. No one understands our family like we do and it’s nice to have someone to talk about it all with without having to stop and explain every other thing. I’m thankful for a sister I can hang out with, go shopping with and grab coffee. I’m thankful for hikes in the woods and long walks in the park. I’m thankful for cats and cat conversations. She’s adopted way more than she needs and that’s how we got Calamity and Pearl. I’m thankful that we can be okay now. Our teenage years were kind of sketchy, a mix of super close and not close at all. We flipflopped a lot on if we even liked each other sometimes, but we’ve grown passed that and have come out stronger for it, I think. I’m thankful for a running partner, whom I can keep up with, and who pushes me to do better. I am so thankful for my sister, from whom I will still occasionally steal clothes. I promise I’ll bring that bra back soon.
Am so so thankful for my sisters-in-law, Lauren and Molly. Though I’ve only known them for three years now I can’t imagine my life without them anymore. Lauren is a senior in college this year, studying art and English and I am so thankful that she’ll be coming back to stay soon, if the current plan holds. Molly is a junior in high school who is thinking about Spanish and writing for majors in a few years, though there’s time for that to change. I am thankful that she doesn’t want to go quite so far for college as Lauren did. Indiana is a pretty long drive. I am so thankful for these beautiful girls and how they absorbed me into their lives so willingly. I am thankful for two more sisters to hang out with, shop at Goodwill and grab Dunkin Donuts coffee with after 2. Lauren is at least half responsible for my latest addiction, and also my inclination to continue my iced coffee drinking into the winter months. It’s cold enough for hot coffee and I still find myself ordering iced. Thanks Lauren. I am thankful our literary talks, for conversations about young adult fiction and classic literature. I am thankful for Molly and her crocheting and knitting influences, for shared patterns and commiserations about stitches and cables. I snuggle the owl she made me practically every day. He is my comfy chair companion. I’m thankful that I get to stand by as she grows into this awesome young woman and help her find her way. I’m thankful that I can give advise where needed and that we are close enough for her to come to me with questions. I am so thankful to be part of their family and to feel so welcome with them. They are both super creative and awesome. I am thankful for my sisters-in-law.
I am so super blessed to have all four of these awesome people in my life. From my birth siblings to my newest additions I am so thankful to have each one of them in my life and I can’t wait to see where the future will take us. I love all of them so much. Today I am thankful for my siblings. What are you thankful for?
