The Great Costume Debate
Good morning, friends! It’s finally fallish and I am very cozily drinking decaf coffee in my comfy chair all snuggled up in my fuzziest of blankets with a very good sweater on. I am hoping my cats will decide to join me soon, though they seem to be hunting something at the moment. Perhaps they’ll calm down in a little while and want some snuggles. Today baby is the size of a mango, apparently, or a four-toed hedgehog, if you prefer. They seem to have skipped pretty much the whole “butterflies” stage and gone straight for the “flailing so hard you an see movement on the outside” stage, because they are my child. Logan might have even felt them already as they were wiggling about the other morning. It’s been an interesting week.
Now that it actually feels like the season it’s supposed to be and the month is chugging along I have a great debate on my hands. I have this debate every year, but this year is especially tough with the addition of a rapidly expanding belly. It’s the great costume debate; what to wear for Halloween. Last year we didn’t really go anywhere or do anything, so I dressed up as a doll to answer the door for trick or treaters. It was a thrown together thing I’ve used before on short notice, but it worked well enough for the four kids who came to our door. I’m debating on if it’s worth putting out candy this year since we’ll be going out half way through trick or treat. This year I’m torn between dressing the bump in a clever way, or dressing me in as a character.
Google has not been my friend this year. I have been trying to find suggestions for pregnant characters to dress up as and it has not at all been working. Annoyingly enough, all of the “pregnant characters” lists that Google has to offer consist mostly of actors or celebrities who were pregnant once. I just want to dress up as a fictional character, is that too much to ask? All of the costumes suggested in all of the lists are trying to be clever with the bump. This isn’t such a bad idea, but they’re all sort of overdone and some are really tacky. The egg thing is cute, and I kind of like the idea of dressing up as a “mummy-to-be”, but the “bun in the oven” is vastly overdone and some like the “it was the milkman” 50s costume, or the “beer belly” hillbilly seem in pretty poor taste. Many of the “creative” costume ideas are just painting the belly like something round: basket ball, a fishbowl, a pokeball, the earth. Okay, Winnie the Pooh is actually a really clever idea and I kind of love that one, but I’m not sure I want to be Winnie the Pooh for Halloween. The avocado costume is also pretty clever. I like that one too. The problem is, they’ve all been done and it feels a little weird copying them.
So naturally I want to turn to comic books for my unique costume idea. My husband and I are super into comic books and I would love to be able to pull out a great pregnant costume from the land of superheroes. The problem is, Spider-Woman. Spider-Woman started her new solo series after the “Secret Wars” event hugely pregnant and that is the only thing you will find if you try to google “pregnant superheroes.” That and something about Elsa and Spiderman, which I’m just not going to investigate. We’ll just leave that one alone. Anyway, the next thing you get after those two is a bunch of fan art of characters that people just want to see pregnant. It’s a thing, it happens, but no actual lists of characters who were actually pregnant in their continuity at any point in time. So once again, Google has not been helpful.
Here’s what I know from my own knowledge, though. Captain Marvel had a super weird flash pregnancy at one point that ended badly and I’m not going there. Jessica Jones has a whole series which follows her as a consultant for a newspaper while pregnant, but she’s with Luke Cage and, for obvious reasons, Logan cannot be Luke Cage for Halloween. Susan Storm has been pregnant a couple times, but spandex is not a thing I want to explore right now and I’m sure Logan does not particularly want to be Mr. Fantastic. On the DC side I’m not as familiar. I know Iris and Barry Allen have children, but I’m not sure how much of that happens in comic and how much is the weird time-travel stuff you get with the Flash. I know Black Canary is pregnant at one point, but not anything about the story that’s from. So, looking to what I do know, and what my husband loves best, I turn to the Super family.
In the recent reboot, the Superman from the old universe managed to escape his dying universe to the new one with his wife, Lois Lane, and their son, Jonathan Kent. Through a lot of comic book-y things, the old Superman became the new universe’s Superman and all of their history got ported over or something. Anyway, Superman and Lois Lane have a son, which means in canon, Lois Lane was pregnant, so therefore, Lois Lane is up for grabs. This is probably the most convenient costume for me to put together. All I need is a press pass and a business outfit and a little name tag for my belly that says “Super Baby.” Logan can do his favorite Clark Kent costume, consisting of his normal work clothes with his favorite Superman shirt showing from underneath his button up. It’s perfect and easy and I just have to hope I fit into some formal clothes.
As of right now, that’s what I’m leaning towards. We are hosting a Halloween party next Saturday, so I have until then to make a definitive decision and throw together my costume. The avocado is not off the table just yet. I’ve got the brown shirt so all I’d need is some poster board and markers. We’ll see what happens. If you have any suggestions, I am all ears. I hope your costume search is going better than mine. Have a lovely day, my friends.

My only idea is Cynthia and Victor Von Doom. I don’t know too much about them accept that Victor did not have any powers.
Victor Von Doom is mostly a Fantastic 4 villain and the leader of a fictional country. From what I can tell, Cynthia is his mother, so that’d be a little weird for me and Logan. Also a very involved costume.
