More on Cats

Good morning, my friends. This morning I gave my cat medicine all by myself. It went better than expected, but then, she is the easy one to give medicine to, so there’s that. If it had been Pearl, I may have been in trouble. Thankfully it’s Calamity who has all the health issues and while super not happy about taking meds, she’s usually a pretty good sport about it. I’m even getting cuddles now, despite shoving a syringe in her mouth. I’ve been thinking about how good my cats are recently, and also I haven’t written about them in a while, so here we are.

Poor Calamity has been having all the eye issues recently. She had a viral flair-up a few weeks ago that got better and then came back last week. This, unfortunately, means that she had to go back to the vet on Friday, which is always a sad. She cried the whole way and just wanted to get back into the carrier once we were there, but she was very good for the vet and I gave her some treats when we got home. She really is a very smart cat. She knows where the carrier goes and avoids it at all costs when it’s opened, but she also knows that it will take her home if she just stays in there long enough.

So the vet prescribed an oral medicine for Calamity’s viral issue, to hopefully keep it from coming back. It’s a fourteen day course and we got it turned into a liquid so we don’t have to mess with getting her to take a pill. It’s been a long time since she had to take a pill and the last one she had to take was a super bitter pill that she would work really hard not to take, so I figured going straight for the liquid would be easiest. So morning and night Calamity gets a little squirt of gross medicine that she isn’t at all a fan of. The first night she spit as much of it out as she could. Our method is generally, Logan holds her, wrapped in a towel, and I pry her mouth open and shove the syringe in to squirt in the medicine as far back as I can so she’ll swallow it without spitting it out. Logan’s been holding her a little longer after she takes it to make sure she’s swallowed the whole thing.

Today we forgot to do it before Logan left, so I got up and did it on my own. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been. She wasn’t happy, but I cornered her between my knees and gave it to her real quick and she seemed okay after that. I must have gotten it in well enough that she didn’t taste it too much. She was a little miffed at me, but she seems to have forgiven me enough for snuggles.

I’m very proud of our cats. They’re a little funny sometimes, but they’re very smart and very sweet. I have a peanut butter English muffin sitting beside me right now, Calamity hasn’t even tried to touch it. She hasn’t even sniffed it and it’s right next to her. She knows it’s my food and not her food. She will occasionally steal plastic bags, but she hasn’t done that in a while. Pearl has taken to hanging out behind the shower curtain recently. Not sure what’s up with that, but she likes it back there, curled up on the bathroom mat, so it must be comfy, I guess. We got lots of snuggles on the couch last night while watching TV. I really like that our cats like to chill with us when we’re hanging out on the couch.

Of course any time I sit down Pearl kind of wants to be in my lap. Or at least she wants my attention. She does, however, have a tendency to flop out of reach or pace where I can’t pet her and then look at me questioningly when I stop. I’ve explained that I can’t reach her there, but she doesn’t seem to understand why I don’t move to accommodate her. Still, she gets so happy when she curls up in my lap and I give her face scritches. She also forgets to swallow when she’s really happy, so there’s a lot of drool going on during these snuggles.

I’m kind of in love with our cats. They’re goofy, sure, and they still like to drop stuff in their water dish, and they steal all my hair ties, all the time, but I love them just the same. Pearl has been hanging out in the new cat nest, which I thought would be Calamity’s spot, but apparently not. Calamity is much more into the chairs and blankets. Just goes to show, you never can tell with cats. I’m just glad one of them really likes it. I was a little afraid neither would use it. I was fairly confident that they’d at least use the scratching posts, though, so I wasn’t too worried.

Cats are a lot of work, and of course they have all the issues in the midst of all the other issues in our life, mainly car things right now, but they are so worth everything we go through for them. I’m really hoping we don’t have to go back to the vet any time soon, though. I’m not a fan of going to the vet either.
