Disney Problem
It’s confession time, once again. I think I have a Disney problem. I didn’t really notice it until I got married, actually. I guess it seemed more normal when I was in college and surrounded by people with a similar condition. When you’re in a group of people who are very quickly approaching the end of their school years you tend to find a lot of nostalgia floating around and Disney is pretty much the most nostalgic thing of all. But when you’ve been out of college for a year and you still ace almost every Disney quiz you take… and are taking Disney quizzes at all for that matter, and can sing along to almost any Disney song, and often do… I think you’ve got a problem. And by you I mean me.
My husband and I are very different in this. My husband grew up with Don Blooth movies, Land Before Time, The Brave Little Toaster, and so on. You know, all the scary, depressing movies of your childhood. They didn’t really watch Disney as kids and as an adult, my husband kind of sees them as the evil corporation. I’ll admit, Disney is spreading and buying things at an alarming rate, but I can’t quite bring myself to call them evil just yet. Yeah, they missed the mark a time or two, who doesn’t? Everyone messes up sometimes, but some of their stuff has been really good too, and for better or worse, they shaped a lot of my childhood.
I remember many afternoons spent watching a Disney movie with my siblings and then quickly rewinding it so that we could watch it again. Sometimes we would alternate movies so we didn’t have to wait for the one to be done rewinding before we could start it again, sometimes it was just the one. I’m sure we drove my mom nuts. Sometimes when we were supposed to be going to sleep, we would play a quotes game. We had most of the movies memorized by then, of course, and in one big room split into three parts it was easy to call over to the other two with a funny quote from Aladdin or The Lion King.
Fifteen years later and I’m still singing Disney songs in the car as I drive up to visit my parents. I can answer most Disney questions, identify movies by their associated image, get almost all the lyrics write to more Disney songs than I’m proud to admit, and name all of the official Disney princesses. I think I have a problem. I am aware that there are people worse off than me. I’m not quite Disney obsessed, but I do think about it more than I should. The thing is, though, I’m an adult now. I don’t have to blindly enjoy movies endlessly because they have the Disney logo on it like I did when I was a child. I can think critically and make sound judgement for myself. This leads us to my next post (hopefully).
I’ve been working and thinking about this for a while. Disney princesses have changed and grown over the years into a giant franchise for Disney. There are eleven, soon to be thirteen, Disney Princesses that range from the extremely annoying to the super BA. And with a range that wide, I felt it was time for someone to rank them in order of their usefulness. So, next time I’ll have a very long post listing all eleven Disney princesses in order of their usefulness. It will be my personal ranking, you are free to disagree and argue, respectfully, in the comments if you so desire. At any rate, I hope you will all join me for the big list!
