Summer Winding Down
We’re almost done, dear friends. We are almost out of summer. Everyone’s gone back to school, the weather has been pleasantly cool, and this is the last day of August. I know fall doesn’t officially start until like the 22nd of September, but the spirit is definitely in the air and with that comes the wrapping up of all the summery things.
The end of August is always a sort of limbo between seasons. I feel like I should still be doing summer things, but the desire for all things fall grows stronger with each passing day. However, it is too soon for fall things, and too warm for fall clothes, and I can’t bring myself to be one of those people who pulls out all the pumpkins prematurely. So here we are, dreaming of fall, but still technically in summer. It’s about now that we realize how much summer we didn’t get to and try to cram all of it in before it’s too late.
Logan and I finally made it to our local farmers market this year. We’ve wanted to go to the farmers market since we moved here but always had something else going on that night. It was really annoying, really. We’d switch a thing during the off season and think “This is the year! We’re going to the farmers market!” And then something would get switched back to Wednesday just in time for the market to open. This summer, though, we’ve been lucky enough to get a brief opening where we happen to be free for a month on Wednesdays! Yesterday we finally managed to get over there, just in time, of course, and we bought tomatoes for Logan and strawberries for me. I’m pretty pumped about these strawberries. My dad grows them every year and I didn’t manage to get any this year. It was really sad. But now I have some of my own to enjoy as a last taste of summer.
I seriously considered buying some corn to take with us to the cabin this weekend, but I wasn’t sure about it, so I didn’t. Corn on the cob is what summer tastes like to me. Much the same way garden fresh tomatoes are what summer tastes like to my husband. Logan is so excited about the tomatoes currently chilling in our fridge. I hope he remembered to take the one for his lunch. I didn’t see it, I don’t think, so I think he must have. Thankfully, we did manage to get corn on the cob at least once this summer, so I am satisfied with that. We never did pull out our grill, though. I’m not sure we have enough forethought for grilling. We tend to be over-busy in the summer and when we happen upon a free evening, it’s a complete surprise to us.
For the most part, I think we’ve covered the majority of our usual summer activities. We went swimming, read in the park a few times, took several road trips, went to a wedding, ate cheese burgers and watermelon, not necessarily at the same time, and mowed the lawn about a thousand times. I even managed to make it to some yard sales with my mom-in-law this year, which was a lot of fun. We traded weddings for trips this year. We went to a gaming convention and to the beach for our anniversary and then again for a family vacation and then drove forever to see our college group. The last trip of the summer is this weekend, the annual Farkas family Labor Day work weekend.
I’m actually really excited to go up this year. We missed last year due to a going away party for some dear friends, so it’ll be nice to get up to the family cabin again and see everyone. I’ve missed camping. There’s nothing quite like sitting around the fire with a cup of coffee in the morning, making mountain pies, hiking in the woods, and gathering by the fire again at night for s’mores. I love everything about being up there and I’m sad we don’t get up there more often. Maybe we’ll try to do that more next year. We’ll see. For this summer, I’ll settle with our one trip, which looks to be nice and cool, and enjoy it while it lasts. I prefer going up in the fall anyway, it combines two of my favorite things.
And that’ll be it for our summer. Once we get back from camping I feel justified in starting all of my favorite fall rituals. I’m going to drink pumpkin spice flavored things and feel no shame. I think I’ll have to read Emma this year. I’ve been putting it off as long as possible, but I think this year I need to tackle one of the bigger books and it’s between Emma and Mansfield Park and everyone has been telling me to read Emma. I don’t understand why everyone likes Emma so much, but maybe I will once I’ve actually read the book. I think I might still compare the page count on each book and see which is actually the longest, though. I started with the shortest, then read the two I liked best, and now I think it’s time for a bigger time commitment. If I start early enough, I should be able to finish it before winter. I hope you’ve all had a lovely summer, and will have a lovely fall, as well. Have a great day, my friends.
