Anniversaries Abound
Good morning friends! Happy two year anniversary! That’s right, it’s been two years since I started Coffee with Purps! I will admit that I’m a little surprised at myself with this one. Sure, I was hoping this would be a long term thing, but I wasn’t entirely convinced that it would last. Writing as much as I have been, even when it’s not been actually interesting, has been challenging and I’ve had to push myself to keep to the schedule, but it’s been worth it, I think. I hope you agree. Thanks for sticking with me so far, guys! It means the world to me.
I’m also impressed that two years in a row the anniversary proper has been on a blogging day. I guess that happens when you switch days halfway through the first year and then throw in a leap year on top of that. Anyway, the anniversary kind of snuck up on me this year, along with another anniversary. This week was the one year anniversary of our big move into the new house. You’d think that would have been a better excuse for not having something big planned for today, but I managed last year somehow. I guess the one year was a little more exciting.
So, yeah, we’ve lived in our own (sort of) house for a whole year now! I have to say, I definitely like it better than the apartment. Less stairs, for one thing. Less concern about what the neighbors will hear, for another. I can jump around all I want and not worry about annoying the guy downstairs. We also don’t have to hear him scream at sports anymore, so that’s cool. Honestly, though, we were really lucky with our first apartment. It was nice, our neighbors were nice, no one was super loud or obnoxious. Except that one guy in the building across from us who felt the need to park his giant truck straddling the line between two parking spots… and in front of the dumpsters on trash day. We all got passive-aggressive letters on our doors about that. But other than that, it was a great place to live. If only it allowed cats we might still be there.
As nice as our old apartment was, we love our new house even more. There’s room to actually move around the kitchen and have more than one person working in there at a time. We have an actual spare room and an office and, most importantly, we have cats! That anniversary is coming up in about a week. Looking at pictures of them is crazy, they’ve grown so much in the past year. Pearl is a nine pound cat. We did not see that coming. She was always the smaller of the two and now she outweighs her sister! Cats are crazy, man. They’ve calmed down considerably, at least at night. We’ve reached a point where they can actually sleep with us, for the most part, without waking us up five times during the night. Now if only Calamity would learn a little patience when it comes to breakfast. Really, waking us up an hour before feeding time is completely unnecessary.
I was going to talk about the house there, and I got side tracked. >.> We’re still slowly molding the house into what we want it to look like. It’s a much slower process than it was with the apartment. I think the long-term nature of living in a house has dampened our sense of urgency. In the apartment I knew we only had a year or two before we would be relocating again, so when we moved in I was torn between customizing it to fit us and making do with how things were. I decorated with the thought of taking everything down in mind. I didn’t go out and get a bunch of stuff to fit the space because it might not fit the next space. There were things that maybe I would have liked to have done, but gave up on the idea of doing there because we didn’t have that much time there.
Here, on the other hand, I have lots of ideas that will maybe get done eventually, but we’ll be here at least five more years, probably, and that seems like a long time. We’re slowly adding the things that we want/need to the space we have. It took us over half a year to finally be the futon moved in and the mattress and everything. We still don’t have other furnishings for the room, which is annoying, but that’s life. We still don’t have a washer and drying, but we’re making do as we’ve done for the past three years, so, you know. The thing about the back room, though, is that we’ll need to turn it into a nursery someday and we don’t know when that day will come. Babies are unpredictable like that. Sure we’ll have advanced warning when the time comes, but the whole vague nature of someday starting a family makes it a little hard to get invested in a room setup that we know will have to change eventually. Still, I feel like a thrift store trip for a small table and a lamp is not too much to ask, right? And maybe a bookshelf. We still need another bookshelf.
So I’m considering making a change again, trying something new. I know of a little local coffee shop that has really good coffee and a good work atmosphere that isn’t hard to get to. When I first started this blog I was trying to get up with Logan every other day and write in a Starbucks near his work. I found, however, that I didn’t work super well there. Part of that might have been the fact that it was freezing there. Like my fingers were stiff from cold kind of freezing. Inside. I don’t understand. Part of it might have just been that I don’t write well outside the house. Also possible. There are simultaneously less and more distractions out there in the world. But it was nice to get out of the house. So I’m thinking, maybe on day a week I’ll go out and blog at this coffee shop, just to try it out. They have an upstairs which is nice and usually less crowded, so I might hide up there. My only concern is that my computer will not be up to it. My poor laptop is nearly six years old now, and his battery is not doing super great. If I got a little keyboard for my tablet that might work, but we’ll see.
I’m hoping, now that I’ve said it out loud, that I’ll actually follow through with this plan. Maybe Fridays would be good. Logan and I often have evening plans for Fridays anyway, so I end up with the car anyway fairly often. It’ll be an adventure! Speaking of Fridays, I’d like to warn you all now that I won’t be writing next Friday as I’ll be going to a wedding at 10 am that day. So that’s a thing. Anyway, thanks again for sticking with me this long, guys. I hope you’ll stick around for the year to come! Thank you for your support and have a lovely day, my friends!
