Days of Thankfulness: Parents

I am super thankful for my parents, all of them. I know, I’ve already gone on and on about how awesome they all are for my mother’s/father’s day posts but bare with me as I tell you again. Because, seriously, it bares repeating as many times as desired.

I’m thankful for my mom. She has been there through every hard thing in my life and every joy and I could not ask for a better support than she has been to me. She was the one who encouraged me to write when I didn’t even realize what a passion I had for it. She encouraged my piano practice when everyone else in the house told me to stop. She was the one who sat up and prayed with me at 2 in the morning while I panicked over graduation and what I was going to do with my life. I am so thankful for her patience and love through the years. For the things shes taught me, the faith she instilled in me and the passions we share. I’m thankful that we can go to musicals and enjoy sappy movies and British television together. I’m thankful that we can have lunch and talk about everything and still have more. I’m thankful for my mom.

I’m thankful for my dad. I didn’t always understand that he loved me, but now that I look back it was always staring me in the face. I am thankful that I have a father who is so devoted to my well being. I’m thankful that he was there for me growing up, to teach me to ride my bike and throw a baseball and a Frisbee and bait a fishing pole. I’m thankful that I grew up fishing with my dad and hiking and camping and riding bikes and going to the drive-in in our pajamas. I’m thankful that he took us spotlighting and let us stand up in the sunroof to see out of the station wagon. I’m thankful that he took care of everything from my college fund to my car so that I could get a good education. I’m thankful that I can learn to bake from him; that we can make candy cane cookies every year and watch old Christmas specials. I’m thankful that because of him, I can say “it’ll be fine” and I know it will be. I’m thankful for my dad.

I’m thankful for my mom-in-law. I have been blessed beyond belief with my new family and I am so thankful for this beautiful woman that I can now call mom. She is the sweetest creature I have ever met and is so willing to help wherever she can. I am thankful to have a mom-in-law who is happy to pick me up and go wherever I need to go, or maybe just hang out for the day. I’m thankful for all the things we share in common, for someone to talk crafts with and drink coffee with on Sundays and compare projects. I’m thankful for another godly example of what a wife and mother should be and another wonderful support in my life. I’m thankful for her willingness to put up with our cats for the next six months, even if they need a lot of care. I’m thankful for her sweet encouragement, for her interest in everything we do and her willingness to listen, even when I ramble. I am thankful for my mom-in-law.

I am thankful for my father-in-law. I’ve gotta say, having your pastor as your father-in-law is pretty cool. I’m thankful that we have such a strong spiritual leader, and that my husband has such an awesome example of what a godly husband and father should be. I’m thankful that, no matter what the issue, I know we can go to him and he will be there with godly council, a prayer, and a hug to go with it. I’m thankful for a father-in-law who never leaves without telling me that he loves me, and makes sure to give me a hug every Sunday. I’m thankful for his willingness to put up with our cats too, even though I’m sure he’s concerned Molly will try and keep them. I’m thankful for his patience with us, and his gentle guidance, for his calls when he knows we’re struggling, for his encouraging words and his willingness to help out however he can. I am thankful for our dance parties in the kitchen and swing music in the living room, and for his vast knowledge of 80’s music. I am thankful for my father-in-law.

Lastly, I am thankful for my parents and my in-laws and the awesome examples they are of lasting marriages. They’re not perfect, by any means, but they are a testament that marriages can and do last, if you choose not to give up on them. I have learned so much from all of them about what it means to be a good spouse, to care for your partner and support them to your fullest. I am so glad that I have these two examples of what a godly marriage should look like and proofs that trust in God can bring your through anything. Today I am thankful for all four of my parents.
